Hunting with a .308 AR-15

Question

what kind of animals can i hunt with a SEMI AUTOMATIC, AR-15 converted to .308 winchester? also is it better with the solid buttstock or the collapsable carbine stock?

Why would you want to hunt with an AR-15 to begin with? I use a bolt action rifle. A semi-automatic is a shell waster. Most people start using 3 or 4 shots or more to accomplish a job when a bolt or lever user takes 1 shot. As for what to hunt, mostly deer. The .308 is considered small for moose and elk. Check with your state to make sure it is even legal to hunt with a semiautomatic rifle. In Pa. you can not use this rifle to hunt with.

You can switch uppers to a .308 upper receiver. You can hunt almost anything in North America with it. If your going to hunt with it, Get the solid buttstock, youll be glad you did.

Of course it is semi.... it an AR. Not an M.

You can hunt practically anything, except bigger stuff like elk or moose you need good ammo and to be within decent range, and to know your limits of how far you can make a good hit.

You might need to use a 5 round magazine.... some laws require that.

Stock shouldn't matter, as long as you are comfortable with the operation of it collapsible seems like it would be fine.

According to Winchesters Product Guide Book for 2008 you can harvest Whitetail Deer, Elk, Moose, Brown Bear, Caribou and Eland if you use the 180 grain Silver-tip manufactured by Winchester, or the 180 grain E-tip.*... I prefer the solid butt-stock.*

You mean an AR-10?  The AR-10 is chambered for the 7.62x51 NATO (which also fires the .308 Winchester).  The .308 Winchester is actually capable of taking any North American big game.  In the AR platform the only thing you'd have to worry about is ammo capacity because some States have restrictions on ammo capacity for hunting big game with a semi-automatic rifle.  There should be magazines limited to five rounds for hunting available for the AR platform.  I'd use the solid butt stock myself.

One of the people we hunt with uses a DPMS AR-10 to hunt with and is quite the accomplished hunter. He had to buy a 5 round magazine of course. And for all you guys that say you can't take larger game with a .308.... is that from actual experience or what you read in a magazine? I have seen a few elk taken with the .308 and there weren't any problems. Bullet placement is far more important than how fast and big your uber magnum is.

There are no AR-15's converted to 308.

Are you thinking of an AR-10? That is made in 308 win. An AR-10 is like an AR-15 on steroids.

The stock style is completely your preference full or tele.

It's probably easier to tell you what's best not to hunt with a 308. Grizzle Bear and Polar Bear very close, Elephant, Lion, Tiger, Cape Buffalo and Rhino. Other than that you got it...

First  --- Its not a converted AR15 to .308. You have to purchase an AR15 already built for the .308 cartridge. The receivers and uppers are a whole different animal than a regular AR chambered in .223 / 5.56......

As an example -- This DPMS rifle is chambered and built for the .308 Winchester... NONE or almost none of the parts interchange with an AR chambered in .223... You cant just change uppers... The receivers different...

Notice how the magazine well is longer than a standard AR15 for .223?

You can hunt deer, bears to 450 pounds and maybe elk but forget large elk or moose....

The .308 has been used to hunt animals as large as Elk Moose and Bear.   An AR10 is an excellent platform for hunting.  Accurate, light and very low recoil.    Stock style is personal preference.  If you are going to mount a scope, then stick to an A3 (removable carry handle/flat top) configuration.   For me personally, mounting a scope on top of the carry handle makes it less comfortable to shoot.  I use a A2 style buttstock.
