  1. As I recall, SE Alabama is woodsy terrain, with all shots under 120 yards, because you can't see any further than that. As a handgun hunter, I must say this is handgun range for a skilled hunter. If you miss with a rifle at this range, don't tell anybody! To help you not miss with that heavy-recoiling grizzly gun used on mere deer, get a newer reloading manual and download to somewhere between 30-30 specs and 300 Savage specs, which are plenty on modest thin-skinned game like deer. You cannot buy this ammo anywhere I have been this week, but you can adjust things to exactly match your mood! Both Hornady and Speer manuals have excellent tutorials on reloading. http://www.midwayUSA.com/ and their google competitors have everything you will need. Regards, Larry.

  2. Unless you have some seriously long range shots, a .300 is a poor choice for white-tail.  Almost any round you use will most likely be traveling so fast that it will be straight thru the deer before it even has a chance to start to mushroom, which will leave you with wounded, not dead deer.

If you ARE shooting at distance, I would suggest Federal Fusion 150gr Soft Points or Hornady or Remington Accutips - Dead on accurate.

If not, you really should reconsider your caliber of choice.  You may have been given this gun by a family member or bought it on a whim, but it really is not correct.  It would be like taking a drag racer to a Nascar Road Race.  In short range, wooded areas a .270 is a perfect round or even the old 30-30.  If you want something you can also plink with, consider a Ruger Mini-30 Ranch Gun.  7.62x39 can be bought in a quality hunting round and has the power of a 30-30 and you can also feed it cheap FMJ rounds to plink with.

  3. Federal Fusion Spitzer boat tail 180 grain. That's the one I like the best.

  4. Balt I loved how you foiled the so called Marine, but I must say you are way off on this.

For starters the 300wsm is not that much faster than a 30-06.

Secondly the faster a bullet goes, the faster it will expand. Bullets fail to expand if they are going too slow.

Whitetail is a thin skinned game. Anything you use will work. I like Hornady SST for a fast expanding round.

Another Idea is to buy a case of 168 grain COR-BON Barnes X. These rip at about 3100 fps, and have a rapid initial expansion, then drive right through. This can be used for anything you hunt, from Whitetail to Moose, Elk ,and Eastern Bear. Buy a bunch, zero at 200 meters, then hunt away and never have to choose again.

    Good Luck

  5. .300WSM for your little Alabama Southern whitetail deer is overkill. A bigger gun does not make one a better hunter. Do some research next time you go to buy a gun and get something correct for the game you intend to hunt, not what the man at the gun shop tells you to buy.

I like Federal hunting ammo, so I'd recommend Fed's Vital Shok 150 gr. You don't need anything bigger for the little deer you get in the South.

Now, look how expensive .300WSM ammo is compared to a caliber you should have bought.

  6. According to Winchesters Product Service Manual for 2008 it is the 150 grain Power-Point.*
