Looking to move to CA for the summer from Ireland on a working visa with some friends. I'm thinking about San Diego, and then I've heard bad things about the ban on alcohol in public, we're not big drinkers but we are looking for a fun summer time, and not sure how that would sit with us! A lot of Irish people seem to being going to Huntington, as it's a bit less touristy than PB. We're really easy about where to go, as long as theres sun, sea and fun times. What I cant get though is accommodation ANYPLACE, I've tried craigslist but it seems a total waste of time, and how much is typical rent?Dont want to get caught out! We're running out of time, any advice?!

  1. You'll have a great time & experience regardless.  However, Huntington Beach is in Orange County while Ocean & Pacific Beach (PB) are in San Diego.  The drive time between the two is approx 1 1/2 hrs.

You can't have open container pretty much anywhere in CA -- so don't let that dissuade you.  But there are bars everything with outside patios to soak in the sun.  Getting drunk every day and meeting folks will be as difficult as putting on your socks.

My two cents: San Diego without a doubt.  Where you're looking is set up for 18-25 yr olds if that's your age bracket.

  2. I would pick Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach over HB any day. They have a great beach town vibe and some great places across the boardwalk to eat or get drinks. San Diego has a great public trans system so you won't have to worry about getting arrested for driving drunk.

I work in HB and you will be bored with the place within 3 weeks. Once you get 6 blocks from the beach it is not a very impressive town. There is also a very large elderly and Mormon population in Huntington Beach and they are not known for partying. HB is VERY touristy. They have torn down every cool old beach shack and put up cookie cutter nonsense shops and homes so the tourists from Iowa, Kansas, Texas, etc. will feel at home.

Like the other poster said, you can't have open containers (alcohol) on the beaches anywhere in Southern California.
