Okay..if my lead leg when jumping is my right, what leg do I start on using the starting blocks? Which leg goes back?

Also..any tips on posture or anything that will help with speed?

It's a really short distance...and I'm not much of a sprinter

  1. Its hard to say which foor should be leading out of the block because your strides will ultimately determine how you should be leaving the block. It took me a long time to master, but try and train your self to jump alternating legs. Its really hard to train your brain to allow the other leg to go, so try not to even think about it. If you can 4 step( i am assuming you are running the 100m and not the 300m), you are OK to use the same leg, but if you are 5 steping you will need to switch off on every other hurdle. Now when you GET really good, and/or have the legs and stride you can do 3 strides in between hurdles and really shave some time off. I have to be honest andsay that I never made it to 3 step, but one of my best rivals did and she smoked me in our final meet.

Practice jumping with both legs on the lowest hurdle to see if you can get your bearings. Then when you are ready to start using the block, have a teammate mark you on where your foot plants before the jump. Try setting the blocks in different positions and go with what feels the most comfortable.

NO STUTTER STEPS!! that costs you time. the least amount of steps you take the better! Good luck, hurdles are so much fun and I hope you stick with them!! You just gave me a chance to walk down memory lane, thanks!

  2. Usually your lead leg is the rear leg in the blocks. This may change depending on how many steps it takes to get to the first hurdle.

Most people get to the first in 8 steps so your take off if from the front foot in the blocks.

The most important thing is to run tall, stand up, don't bend over or prepare for the hurdle, it will cause  you to go up too  much.

Hurdling is sprinting over barriers, so you need speed.

To make up for your lack of speed you must have great form so you can carry your speed over each hurdle.

  3. The lead leg is the back leg in the blocks

If youre more of a distance person, that good, you;ll have stength... You can get faster in a matter of 2 weeks of sprinter workouts

    good luck
