I just read that Hurricane Bertha got stronger moving up to a cat. 3 within a couple of hours over water that was not warm enough to intensify it that much. What do you think is causing it to get stronger??

  1. The Russians are playing weather maker.

  2. What is amazing about Bertha is the fact she formed right off of Africa early July. I believe it is the furthest and earliest storm to appear in the Cape Verde season(mid August to early October runs the peak Cape Verde season). The weather patterns and ocean temperatures are in place very early this 08 season. I would assume it is going to be a nasty hurricane season.

  3. Forecasting hurricane strength changes has always been a dilemma, as the core processes that are involved are not well understood and modeled.  It did strengthen quicker than expected, likely because the atmosphere in it's vicinity was better suited than thought.  There have not been any recon missions to Bertha, so the atmosphere in it's vicinity is pretty much estimated based on remote sensing by satellites.

  4. Bertha is down to a category 1 with 90 mph around bermuda

Bertha was unusual in that it strengthened so far east of where hurricanes usually do
