Hurricane Fly laying foundations for success in the National Hunt season
One of the best campaigns ever since the 2012 National Hunt season shot in is that of the eight-year-old bay gelding, Hurricane Fly. The top two-miler was highly impressive in his most recent attempt and has got the connections seriously considering options for the season, making sure that the gelding gets the races that suit his calibre and potential, the latter he made clear when winning by a staggering margin.
The trainer, Willie Mullins, has his plan set for the Istabraq Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown for Montjeu’s gelding. Winning the race, for which the chances are really high, the Agricola Del Parco bred will have on his profile two successes at Leopardstown and two at Punchestown.
Three out of his four outings have found him in meticulous form.
Riding in the capable hands of the regular jockey, Ruby Walsh, ever since the new season kicked in, Hurricane Fly, was a hard one to contain in the Grade 1 Dobbins & Madigans @ Punchestown Morgiana Hurdle on 18th November, 2012 over two miles.
The outcome of the race was highly uncertain even until the final flight, but as Go Native took a beating when jumping over the final hurdle, the contest has actually ended with the favourite entry by an amazing margin of twelve lengths.
"We weren't worried about the trip or ground. All we were really worried about was facing two rivals who were race-fit. As he gets older he seems to settle better and hopefully he'll improve from that. He's certainly a different horse to last year. I was not happy with him last season.”
Hurricane Fly gave the trainer the third success on the card that day.
Willie Mullins is at the top of the world with the remarkably improved form of his under charge as compared to what he brought back to the stable last season. The races failed to tickle the trainer’s fancy.
"I was more than happy with the run and he seems absolutely fine today," said Mullins.
"I'd say he will probably go to Leopardstown after Christmas now."
He entered the season with success in the Grade 1 BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown and then almost three months down the 2012 campaign, the Irish bay gelding landed the Grade 1 Rabobank Champion Hurdle on 27th April, 2012.
