Hurricane Fly stars in Rabobank Champion Hurdle
Hurricane Fly stamped authority in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) at Punchestown in Ireland on Friday, April 26, 2013. No one was able to come closer to him, as he was simply awesome in the 2 mile event.
His speed was impressive and he jumped really nicely too. Even though some of the runners tried to match him in terms of speed, but they failed to match his skills, when it comes to smooth jumping over the hurdles.
The nine-year-old runner was given a general starting price of 1 to 4 and he lived up to the expectations of the bookies. Although most of the punters gambled money on him, yet some experimented on other challengers too.
It proved to be a one-sided battle in the end though, as Hurricane Fly was matchless. He had to fight hard because of the ground conditions, as rain had affected the ground badly. Despite that, he was determined to do well and made his team proud. He started
off steadily and did not waste energy in the opening phases of the race.
This proved to be a clever strategy, as he managed to save some energy for the ending moments. Once he got into the lead, no one was able to get near him and he finished on top of the table by seven lengths.
His trainer Willie Mullins was happy with the outcome of the race and said, “Last Saturday morning himself and Quevega worked and they blew me away with the work they did so we were keeping our fingers crossed that it was as good as it looked. He hasn't
many miles on the clock, so we'll keep him fresh and come back for the the same races again. You're always scared of younger horses coming up as they can improve, my fellow won't.”
He went onto say, “That's his form. Younger horses can improve up to a stone or even more as they mature. You have to respect their form.”
Overall, Hurricane Fly’s performances have been really impressive in his career. Hurdles have been his speciality though, as he has managed to win 18 of them out of 21 times.
