If there is anyone who knows of temporary animal shelters or agencies helping to shelter pets for those who may have to bus out of there and cannot take pets, can you please make the public and YA aware?

There are people who may not leave because they can't take their pets and won't leave them behind. HELP these people please and quickly.

  1. Whatever you do, officials are begging you not to leave your animal behind.  I read that if you take an evacuation bus out of the area, you can take animals 15 lbs. or less on your lap in a carrier. If your animal is larger than that, they will be transported to a pet-friendly shelter (make sure they have tags, documentation, food, etc.).

I also read that Shreveport fairgrounds and the Monroe Civic Center are accepting people with pets.

These two sites can help you find hotels that allow pets:

    www.petswelcome.com or www.pets-allowed-hotels.com

Many other hotels may bend their rules given the circumstances.

Good luck - whatever you do, evacuate and take your pet with you.

  2.   THIS IS AN EXCELLENT QUESTION ! ! ! !

Because of the lack of preparedness during Hurricane Katrina, there has been ALOT more planning on all levels of government.

Check with your local officials who in turn are working with their county officials who in turn are working with state officials and so on.

You can also check with your local Red Cross officials who are working closely with the above mentioned officials.

You could also possibly check with your local ASPCA Chapter or local Humane Society who are probably working just as closely with the above mentioned officials.

I think if I was faced with this dilemma I would make sure that my dogs had Micro Chips implanted if not already in place.    It is a simple, inexpensive and painless procedure that helps to identify lost animals and is implemented with many Animal Shelters,Vet's and Humane Societies in an effort to reunite lost pets with their owners. You could include alternate addresses for placing your seperated animals since you may not be at your own address.

As another effort I might actually take a small empty medicine bottle and place pertinent information in it and wrap it with alot of duct tape to help water proof it and attach it to the collar of the animal so that should you get seperated from the animal there might be some additonal information that might help reunite a pet with it's owner. . . . information such as an alternative means of placing the animal with relatives/friends ,special diets, medical concerns etc.

GOOD LUCK  and I hope this helps.

  5. Wow! You are a smart thinker! Unfortunately, living in Manhattan I do not know any shelters for animals for Gustav. I wish you luck though!

  6. I was so worried about the pets. Im afraid a lot of animals are going to be left defenseless to face the hurricane. I know spca is working to get these pets into their shelters outside La. I wish I had a good answer for you. I know Im willing to take in a dog since Im in houston and not very far. I already have a dog and a cat and if i can help by taking one in I would be totally fine with that.

  7. This is the first thing that I've been wondering about myself.

There seems to be some good information here:

Good luck to everyone and their pets.

The folks from Pasado's Haven are doing great work and have arranged  a holding area. They need volunteers and donations. See the link.

  9. My husband and I live in College Station, Texas and if anyone knows of someone who needs to be housed during this time, our home is opened.

  10. Found this.  Perhaps people can start making phone calls to see what help is available.  Thanks for caring.
