Hurricane Gustav at category 4 status!?

Wow, it hasn't even entered the Gulf of Mexico yet! Does anyone else think Gustav will become one of the most powerful hurricanes ever?

It is entirely possible.  I'm keeping my eye on it since I live near Houston, TX.  If it's that big, it's a major problem for sure.  They are getting people out of New Orleans already.

im glad i live in virginia lol, not many powerful hurricanes hit us, sometimes we get an category 2 at best, but usually the remnances of hurricanes like fay, wasnt even windy when she got here, just some good rain.

Its sooo hot right now that the warm water will make it even more stronger.

Gustav will likely strengthen into a category 5, if not before Cuba, it will in the gulf. there is a large amount of warm water just north of Cuba in the gulf (gulf loop current). if it becomes the strongest ever, I don't know.

as far as hitting land goes, i believe that Gustav will weaken somewhat as it nears land (maybe cat 3 or 4) but either way it will still be a major hurricane. first, as a hurricane nears land it usually weakens, due the continental shelf, and second the waters are alot more shallow near the coast allowing less water to be evaporated into the storm.

EDIT: as far as Cuba goes, Eastern Cuba is not a mountainous region, and therefore will not tear apart GUSTAV as badly as say Haiti did, it may weaken it slightly, but not signifigantly
