  1. Gustav is expected to be comparable in strength to Katrina at landfall, or possibly stronger.  Katrina's maximum wind speeds were 175 mph; Gustav is not expected to reach quite that strength, but Katrina made landfall with winds of 120 mph while Gustav is currently forecast to make landfall with winds of at least 130 mph.

The hardest hit area will be immediately to the east of wherever the eye comes ashore.  This occurs because a Northern Hemisphere low pressure system rotates counter-clockwise, meaning that the greatest onshore winds (and thus greatest storm surge) occur to the right of the landfall location (relative to the direction of the storm's motion).  Currently, the storm is expected to make landfall on the southern Louisiana coast, which means that New Orleans could potentially be in the path of greatest destruction.

  2. The projection path has gotten stronger and a touch more east than earlier today. It looks like it will make landfall somewhere from Morgan City to Abbeville. I live in Lafayette about 10 miles north of Abbeville, I am starting to get a little worried.

  3. It might be at least as strong as Katrina. The path is not well defined yet but this is the latest:

  4. Nothern Louisiana is going to get hit the most, because it is in the direct path of the storm

  5. Its gonna hit hard.

  6. well the weather reports as well as news report claim for it to hit, mostly in the same spot as katrina, but wider spread. I am in ** and they are currently preparing shelters for refugees from gustav

  7. Obviously Gustav (Gustavo in Spanish) already hit Haiti where about 80 people died, some of the Jamaica was destroyed, Cuba too. I know for sure that US will be also hit by hurricane Gustavo. I watched this all news on Telemundo and  Univision.

  8. I live in Baton Rouge, and we're expecting strong winds and a lot of rain.  We don't think we'll lose our roof or anything, but it could get ugly.
