Hurricane Irene postpones New York Mets vs Atlanta Braves – MLB Update
The third game of the three-game series between New York Mets and Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in New York, NY on Sunday, August 28 was postponed due to Hurricane Irene. No make-up date has been announced as till yet.
The tropical storm caused immense damage in New York City on Saturday and Sunday but the stadium remained safe and there was no major damage to the infrastructure of the playing field.
The Mets were scheduled to play three games against the Braves but games planned for Saturday and Sunday were postponed to avoid the dire consequences of the hurricane. The authorities have now given a green signal for play to resume as per normal schedule
and the Mets will now host the Florida Marlins for a five-game series beginning August 29.
A Mets spokesperson confirmed that there was no damage to the facility and that Citi Field should be ready to host the Marlins on Monday.
The Mets were strong in the first game of the series where they went on to blank the Braves 6-0. The Braves have not been as impressive on the road games as they have been on the home games and this was one area which the Mets were looking to exploit. The
Braves are, nonetheless, going strong thus far with just six games behind League leaders Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets, on the contrary, are 21.5 games behind Phillies and at least 15.5 games behind Atlanta.
With a lifeless 26-35 record at home, the Mets had a good chance of improving their statistics but nature became a big hindrance in this aim. However, the Mets now have Marlins at home and they would go all-out to prove their mettle.
The Braves have been in top-form this season and the only obstruction on their way to the postseason as division leader are the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves have been on the winning side in 79 of their total 133 games and their loss to the Mets in the
first game of the series was only second in their last nine games.
The Braves are now scheduled to host the Washington Nationals for a three-game series beginning Tuesday, August 30.
