Help I live in Louisiana and I am worried to death about Hurricane/Tropical Storm Gustav hitting Louisiana!!!! I have a 5 month old and I need to know what should I have for her to be prepared in cases of evacuation. This is the first storm that is even coming close to hitting us. I am clueless on what all I should have packed for her. Here is what I have so far.

9 cans of formula (did breast feed for 6 weeks but was not producing enough milk)

3 cases of water

Clothes

Baby food

Medicine

Blankets

Batteries

Wipes

Diapers

Is there something that I am forgetting or any suggestions of things that helped out in a situation.

  1. hand sanitizer

gas can for extra gas if you need to go and cant stop

get a big water jugs at least 3 or 4 and fill it with tap water now just in case you have to stay and need to bathe

mouth wash(since water will be cut off you can use mouth wash to brush your teeth instead of your precious water)

    battery operated lanterns

    lighters

good luck! hope it misses u guys over there

  2. Honestly I know (not the kid part but the hurricane part, Katrina kicked me out of Biloxi, MS) and you can NEVER have too much water.  If you're not evacuating, be aware of where your house lies, if it'll flood, etc. because no amount a goods will be enough if they all wash away.  If you're staying and the house is presumably safe, water water water water water water, a simple first aid kit, a can opener for your multitude of cans of food and always assume your electricity AND cell phone will not work for weeks afterward so tell friends and family exactly what you plan to do NOW before communication is cut off.  A bucket for washing clothes and bodies is a good idea.  Antibacterial ointment and soap is really good...did I mention water?

Get online to get a more complete listing of what you should have though.

    Good Luck!

  3. You got some great advice already.  I do hope all your worry ends up being for nothing.

Will keep you and yours in my prayers, and I will star this in hopes that others will do the same.

    Take care!  Hugs!

  4. As the person before me said, you have some good advice about the things you will need already. If you decide not to go anywhere one tip I can give you is to fill your bathtubs before the storm hits. That way you will have even more water for washing and flushing toilets if needed. I have lived in Florida all my life so I have been through many storms and we always filled the tubs just in case.

I hope everything works out and the storm passes you by with no problems!

  5. We lived in New Orleans when my son was born, and he was born right between two hurricanes (Isidore and Lili).  Since Isidore was downgraded and I was very pregnant, we decided to stay put.  Our building was more than structurally sound, and we lived on the third floor, so we figured we were better off waiting it out than getting caught in the mess of people trying to evacuate.  I went into labor two days before Lili blew through, so I was safely tucked away in the hospital with auxilliary power (and cable!).

But sometimes you do have to plan to evacuate, as was the case with Katrina.  In addition to the things you have listed, you may want to go to the bank and get some cash out now, so you aren't having to stop on the way.  Pack a couple of good flashlights and make sure your cell phones are fully charged and ready to go.  You may want to get a car charger if you don't have one.  You may also want a portable crib for the baby, in case the hotel where you stay doesn't have one.  Make sure you have water and snacks packed for you and your husband as well, because if traffic gets really backed up, you might not be able to stop.  Bring a first aid kit and pillows and blankets for you and your husband (just in case you have to sleep in the car).  Make sure you have any important documents either with you or safely locked away in a safe deposit box.

Get on the computer and plan your evacuation route, and make note of some hotels that are along the way.  If you think you will be evacuating, call ahead for a reservation, because they fill up very quickly.

Make sure your car is in good shape, filled with gas, and ready to go at a moment's notice.

  6. yeh don't forget shot records and important medications and favorite toys and pacifiers! Also take plenty of water! If you stay, the water will be no good and if you evacuate, wherever you go may have nasty water. I'm on the Gulf Coast and looks like we're going to get it too! I went supply shopping today. Also, make sure you have a manual can opener for the formula.

  7. First aid kit, thermometer, flashlight

  8. Looks like you just about covered everything :]

Just be careful not to let off any signs that there is trouble to the baby, she could catch off pretty quick when something is wrong from facial expressions or the way you talk so try to sound calm and let her rest throughout the storm if possible!

  9. bottles

    and maybe some toys

  10. Don't forget to bring important paperwork,

    Shot records

    Birth certificate

    SS Card

We are also in the Gulf Coast, so I understand your nervousness.

  11. go to getagameplan.org.   i live on the coast too.  everything you need for your whole family is on that site.  it is sponsered by your state.  lets all cross our fingers.  good luck & god bless

  12. hey i live in baton rouge, i am pretty sure we are all in louisiana gonna get it. if u live in new orleans or homa than leave, because we are already shutting schools off for tuesday a

  13. well I don't know about the baby bot nola has a really helpful to-do list for your household, most important I think was the papers to do with insurance, cc info, banking, they also say bring documents pertaining to katrina repairs, etc. good luck my prayers are with you

  14. any of her keepsake stuff(coming home outfit, stuff like that), photos, of course her important papers, and don't forget about yourself..make sure and pack everything YOU need also mommy...

    Hugs

    and LOTS of Prayers

  15. Pacifier, Toys, and Don't forget the baby herself!

You should start packing all your necessities now just in case so when time to evacuate you have everything prepared and ready to leave!

  16. I am sure you have these. But clothes!!! Need those also. Take your pictures and stuff that can't be replaced if ruined. Handmade baby blankets and the stuff like that. At least I would take those with me. Those things are irreplaceable.

Good Luck and God Bless and keep you safe.
