Husarova/Rybarikova slash Birnerova/Krajicek to lift the doubles gold – Budapest Grand Prix 2012
Unseeded Slovakian duo of Janette Husarova and Magdalena Rybarikova continued to impress the tennis fans by winning the Budapest Grand Prix doubles title on Saturday. They outsmarted the Czech-Dutch tandem of Eva Birnerova and
Michaella Krajicek in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to claim the championship title at the clay courts of Budapest, Hungary.
It was a fairly one-sided contest, with Husarova and Rybarikova dominating for most of the time. The unseeded Slovaks were lucky to get a walkover in the second quarter-final round, as their second seeded opponents, Marina Erakovic
and Elena Vesnina, pulled out of the tournament due to injury. Husarova and Rybarikova fully cashed in their lucky run and went on to register an emphatic victory in the final of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event.
Birnerova and Krajicek registered the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating the top seeded pair of Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of eight. They failed to replicate the similar sort of performance
in the final showdown of the tournament and had no option but to submit to their Slovak opponents. Birnerova and Krajicek posed some early resistance in the opening set but gradually lost their steam in the following set to let an easy passage to their opponents.
Husarova and Rybarikova delivered 72 per cent of their first serves on target and secured 22 out of 38 points on it to come out as the winner. The Slovaks had six break opportunities in the match and five conversions proved sufficient
for them to claim the championship title, whilst Birnerova and Krajicek could barely register two break points in the entire contest to finish on the losing side in the end.
The contest started off with a cracking breakthrough from Birnerova and Krajicek, who raced away to 3-0 in no time. They failed to sustain their momentum in the later parts of the set, with Husarova and Rybarikova coming up with
two crucial break points to serve out of the first set at 6-4. The unseeded Slovaks nailed three more breaks of serve in the following set and closed out their championship victory at 6-2.
