  1. yes in some cases they will send him home to heal up before sending him back to restart Basic.  It is an option usually for those who KNOW they will be  in long term recovery.

Took my knee nine weeks to heal..and I didn't require surgery or pins.

  2. Yeah, I just completed Basic at Fort Benning and this type of thing happened all the time.  Someone would get injured, they'd go home for 30 days, then come back and either (1) begin a rehab program to strenghten whatever they broke (2) or jump in with some other company.  You're right though if you get injured you pretty much have to start over.  Don't believe the Army because they'll say anything to get you back - they'll say they'll bring him back in week 6 or 7 or whatever it was, but in reality he'll be droped back to week 2 with some other company.  He won't be discharged just for getting injured though, no.  Not unless its some kind of life changing injury - an eye injury or something.

  3. That is fairly common actually with injuries that require time to heal. Even with the best medical care in the world the body has to be allowed to do it's thing as far as healing - it just takes time. Because basic training units are not set up to allow for someone to rest and recover the best choice is often to send the person out on convalescent leave while they heal.

He will recover much more quickly at home as opposed to being more or less on his own sitting in a training unit's barracks.

Provided his knee heals the way it should he will be back in training in a matter of month.

  4. It's called (or was when I was in during the civil war, yes, I'm old) Convalescing Leave or Status. Next time tell him to buckle his seat belt on the bar stool.
