Does your husband or significant other ever, in the middle of the movie/ TV show that you are watching, decide to change the settings? I mean, the color, the screen size, volume control, etc.? Why do they have to do this in the middle of the movie? Why not at the beginning? It seems to happen every time. My husband is obsessed with the controlls. I just want to choke him when a good part comes on and he's over in his chair fidling with that remote. I think that next time, I'm going to hide it.

  1. >Why do they have to do this in the middle of the movie?

Well, I'm an engineer and I've never adjusted the picture while someone else was watching the TV.

    I've also studied psychology however.

Unless he has some obsessive-compulsive disorder, it's not about how well adjusted the TV is.

Most likely something is bugging him about your relationship and he has developed a (probably subconscious) drive to bug you about it.

If it's subconscious, there is no point in asking him about it.

Since he's a guy, the three things to start with are money, food, and s*x. Not one of those? Well think about things from his point of view. Do you interrupt things he does (like watch a football game?) over things of no immediate interest to him?

I suppose you could get him intoxicated and convince him to tell you the three most annoying quirks you have.

  2. Purchase a copy of Digital Video Essentials. It's a dvd that help set the tv up properly. After that, he should be convinced that the settings are as good as they can get and leave it alone. I have linked you to Best Buy and the DVD version (they also have a blu-ray version if you have a blu-ray player). You can find it on Amazon.com , Circuit City, Radio Shack, etc. as well.

  3. Here's a better idea: get your own TV. That way you can watch your chick-flick in peace, and you won't be pestering him about the controls.

    Problem solved.

  4. Gotta love him, huh? LOL  Maybe call him over and ask him for a favor to "fix" your tv for you when the movie starts and then kiss him for saving you. If he trys it in the middle when you haven't asked - heave a heavy object at his head missing by mere centimeters.

  5. The reason he feels compelled to change it during the movie (instead of before) is that he probably notices some artifact or picture flaw that is only obvious during a certain scene - maybe a skin tone looks a little too red or shadow details are lost in the darker scenes.  He's only doing it because he wants the picture to look its best for both of you!

Chances are that your TV could use a calibration.  This is done either by hiring a professional calibrator (which can be expensive) or by doing it yourself (himself) using a store bought calibration DVD.  Surprise him by buying one of these discs for an upcoming birthday or just for fun and give it to him with a note that says "now, you can set the TV up once and you won't have to fiddle with it every time we watch a movie!"

He will be impressed.  Below is a link to an article with details on how to calibrate an HDTV, along with links for a couple of good calibration DVDs: AVIA Guide to Home Theater, and the simple but useful "Monster HDTV calibration disc."
