Question:

Husband in basic training, but is coming home with a medical discharge....

I recently posted a post and was not specific enough. My husband went to the Dr. on base last Wed. with what he thought was a hernia. They told him that they were going to give him a ultrasound to see if it was bad enough to operate. Turns out that it wasn't a hernia, his testicles are filling with fluid. This was not a previous injury, they gave him both physicals before he left. He must of gotten this down there. They are listing as a previous injury , so he gets no pension when he comes home. Is that right?

Also my previous question was when can I expect my husband home? People are saying months, weeks, days? Does it depend? He is in Fort Benning, Ga right now and goes back to see the Dr. on Tuesday (and from what he told me, they are going to discharge him from that point) Then what? What is the process anyone know? Thanks for all your help. If I am missing information, please fill me in on what you guys all know, I am just a worried wife, who wants her husband home!!!

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but until he graduates Basic he won't get a discharge.  Instead he will be hit with a seperation, which means he gets nothing.

  2. No telling how long it will take him to get home.  I'd go to the VA once he gets out and try to get full benefits, though.  If tou get a laywer and wait long enough, he can probably get the army or the VA to pay the medical bill.

  3. yea more than likely for something like that they wont give him money for it.... my husband had it when he was a kid, they fixed it and he is in the army now. maybe if he gets things under control he can go back and try again.

It all depends on how fast the army wants to discharge him and all the paperwork if ya need to talk - carolin.arrington@yahoo.com

  4. From what I understand he will receive an entry-level discharge. He will get a DD-214 andno benefits. If the Army says it is pre-existing then h is pretty much done. As someone that has not even graduatedbasic yt he has very little say in much. He will recover from this butis can also easily reoccur. So getting back in may be hard. He will sit around Benning untill he is doing better. It has been a while since basic for me but it doesn't change much.

  5. the military is famous for this.

please make sure that they do not document this as a previous medical condition. he will loose all VA benefits!

im in the navy so i will explain how we would handle the situation, assuming all branches are somewhat the same when it comes to a medical discharge.

when in boot camp,  and you were medically discharged,  we would not send you home until you were in better.  meaning perfroming necessary surgery's etc. Now if they document it as a previous condition they could call him a liar and make him stay in a holding company picking up trash until they were satisfied with the work they got out of him.  When i was a boot, we had a guy get sick and discharged, i graduated and he was still there.  i hope this helps, but for his sake and yours,  make sure this is not documented as a previous condition.  If necessary have him talk to his local JAG, they can get in touch with his previous doctors ETC.  HE HAS RIGHTS,  they know he is new and does not know everything he is entitled to....  they are taking complete advantage...

  6. You're not entitled to anything until after you complete Basic so you won't get a pension.  The military is more concerend with getting people to training then they are getting people home.  He'll have a lot of paper work to do and it also depends on how many other people are waiting in line before him.  That's why you're given a broad range - nobody here can narrow it down any further for you.  He'll be home soon enough.

  7. I am glad that he won't be going into a war zone. It is wrong to do that and deny his pension. If he was in good enough health to induct he deserves a pension. I think you need an attorney right away. Some attorneys specialize in military law which can be weird. W's administration has pulled this trick many times. There may be a class action lawsuit your husband can join.
