My husband and I recently got married right before he left. The ARMY will be filling out all of the info on our marriage when he gets to reception. I was just wondering, does anyone have any advice on where to start with all the paperwork I need to get done myself? Such as ID and what I will need for all of it? I'm completely lost and not familiar with any of the military life. If anyone has any advice please help. Thank you.

  1. Not to worry - the military has been doing paperwork on newlyweds since Day 1!

It will be helpful to have a certified  copy of your birth certificate and you marraige license - both available from the clerk in the appropriate juridictions.

    Congrats - good luck!

  2. Are you near the base?

Find the Soldier's Support Center.  Get in touch with his commander.  If he just left for basic training, then he's got a week or so of reception in which they'll give him the contact numbers for everything you need to do for healthcare, government IDs, separation pay, housing allowances, and other resources.

If he doesn't get that information, then when he gets out of reception and into basic training, tell him to ask his drill sergeants for a point-of-contact for you to take care of these things.

Failing that, get in touch with the commander of his training company (usually a captain), he can help point you in the right directions.

  3. After you get enrolled in DEERS you can go to the nearest Army Installation to get your ID card which will be after the first week he is in reception.  If you aren't close to an Army installation you will have to wait!

  4. You don't do any of this til you get to your duty station.  When you get there your husband will have to take you to a place to do all of that stuff.  Don't worry it isnt hard to do.  Good luck

  5. All you need is your marriage lisence, and a photo ID. The first thing you need to do is to register with DEERs. This will give you your ID card and put you in the system, and determine life insurance policies. Then you go to Tricare for medical insurance. Just be sure to keep a copy of your marriage lisence at all times. It seems like when you first get married everyone asks for this.

  6. you have to wait for everything, they will send you the paperwork and if you have a POA then you can go to an army base near you and get it done, or you can just wait till he graduates from basic and then get it done there after he graduates. Pretty much its a waiting game for all that. If ya got more questions feel free to email me - carolin.arrington@yahoo.com

  7. You pretty much can't do anything yourself. He can not do anything on your behalf until he has completed basic. You just have to wait. But when he does complete basic you will need your offical origional copy of your marriage cert, your birth cert, and your social security card. He will be well informed of what he needs to have in order to have you enrolled, don't worry. Good luck.

  8. He will take a certified copy of your marriage license and birth certificate with him when he leaves. When he gets there he will go through reception and fill out all the paperwork he needs for you. He will then mail you a packet that contains a dd 1173 and a POA and your certificates back. You take the dd 1173 and POA along with your drivers license to the nearest military installation(it doesn't have to be Army) and they will issue your dependant id card. He enrolls you in DEERS and tri care. Good Luck!!!!!!!!
