Husband really likes the name Alexander. I could live with it but...

I think I could live with it especially since everyone hates every other name I come up with so here is the dilemma.

A nickname...

My girls/husband all like Alex for short. Isn't Alex becoming a girl nickname? Would he hate me later that I didn't stand up and say no because he has a girl name? Would Lex or Xander be more appropriate or is that even worse?

Alexander is just soooo popular of a name right now, but my husband has been set on it for months and I haven't been really motivated for an alternative.

Suggestions? Chuck it entirely or keep it? Different nickname or Alex?

  1. Xander (or Zander) is a nice name all by it self.

i personally think Alex can be a unisex nickname. on a girl it's cute and spunky, on a boy it's strong and masculine. i like Alex.

why not use Alexander as a middle name and you two try to come up w/a different first name.

what my hubby and i have done over the years is sit down and write up 20 names that we each like. then we switched lists and each got to mark off 10 names that we didn't like. then we discussed them, and then we marked off 5 more names we didn't like on the other ones list, leaving us each w/5 names.

we picked our favorite three from our own list, and then we switched lists again and took 2 names off...leaving one name a piece.

we then used the names as the baby's first and middle name.

takes forever, but its called compromise. and it's work! lol

  2. Lex I like better as a nickname, but Alex is not too girly to me, it always sounds guy-ish when its a chick name. Maybe Alexander could be the middle name or he could go by his middle name?

  3. Xander is a lovely name, and no Alex is for both boys, and girls. Either way, I love it. There are a few famous Xander's, and it's their original name, not coming from Alexander.

My son's name is Xenon, which in old Greek means stranger, and he has always been proud of his name. He's the only person I know of who has that name. In English it's a gas found in oxygen a scientist accidently found, that is essencial to humans. It's in the dictionary, and my favorite letter is X, and that's how I found my son's name.

Because of that name, so many people, kids alike, have learned something new, and my son has pride in his name.

It is important that you choose a name for your child that truly comes from your heart.

Take your time, it'll all be good.

  4. To be honest with you I shouldnt worry too much about names as soon as he is born and you get used to the idea of him having a name you will love it and come up with nick names as time goes on...

My sisters husband wanted to call there son Daniel which they did... to begin with no one was quite sure of the name but now its perfect for him I couldnt imagine him being called anything else he has lots of nick names

    Mainly DanDan and SuperDan ;)

  5. if you really want use his nickname as Alekz...its different...or lex is cute...he will choose a nickname when he gets older anyways.

  6. I'm not the biggest Alexander fan, and I totally get what you're saying about Alex. I actually like Lex a lot, but I hate Xander. You could change it up a bit, like make it "Alexandros", the real greek name of Alexander the great, or "Alexandre", the french version. I think the french version is really romantic and will be very appealing to girls when he is older.

  7. Xander for short is a nice nickname.

  8. Al works too. But I wouldn't give him a nickname based on his name. I would give him a nick name based on something that makes him special.

  9. I say Alexander is a great name! But i like Xander as a nickname better because so many people are trying to give their girls "boys" names.

I would say, go with Alexander, but insist that since he chose the name you get to chose his nickname, and decide which one you like more. Lex is kind of girly too (s**y Lexy)

  10. Xander

  11. lex and xander are even worse..sorry...but i think alex will be just fine

  12. I like the name Alexander and the name Alex as a nickname. I think Alex still suits a boy.

  13. zander for short that is what we call my nephew for short :)

  14. The nickname shouldn't be a worry. Nicknames are based on the person's looks, interests, hobbies, personality, etc.

Xander is a cool nickname, and it's different too. I don't think Alex is very feminine. It suits well for a boy AND girl.

If he has a middle name or last name that begins with J, AJ would be an appropriate nickname, and a very nice one!

But the nickname shouldn't be a HUGE worry.

    Congrats & Best wishes!!

  15. I like Alexander and my husband wanted to name our daughter Alex. I know three girls with that name. I think Lex is a cute nickname for a boy.

  16. I think Alexander is a great name!  I like Alex.  It is a guy's name although it has become more gender-neutral.

  17. What about Lexy......but I do like Lex

  18. Personally, I love the name Alexander. It's a nice strong name. But, yes, it is popular.

Alex IS becoming a girl's nickname, but I know a few guys named Alex and they don't mind. But it's so uni-s*x that when I think of girls named Alex I think of them as a little bit tom-boyish, and when I  think of guys named Alex I think of them as a little bit more feminine.

Please don't use Lex. Lex is a girl's nickname, definitely. Do not use it. I know lots of girls nicknamed that since their names are Alexa and Alexis.

I like Zander. It's very clear on how to pronounce, and sounds cool.

  19. Believe it or not, I hear Lex more for girls than for boys as of late.  My friends' sons name is Alexander and we call him Alex or AJ for short, nothing female about that kid either lol.

  20. her nick name would be big al and you could call him alli oop from the 60's song.

  21. Xander is the cutest for a nickname :-)

  22. I do not think Alex is girly. I don't know a single girl named Alex, I know one named Alexandria, but that is who she is, nothing shortened.

I like the name Alexander. I know a girl who's son has this name and he goes by Xander. I have never heard her refer to him as Alexander. I see nothing wrong with the name at all. There is nothing wrong with normal names.

  23. Alex is a unisex nickname, short for Alexander, Alexei, Alexa, Alexis, and Alexandra, to name a few. It's not solely a girl's name! That's like saying Andy, Sam, or Pat are just girl names. Your son can have more than one nickname, too. You can call him Lex and Xander too, and your husband can call him Alex. My mom calls me Katherine, and my dad calls me Kate.

If you like it, go with it. It's a fine, masculine name that will wear well throughout life.
