Question:

Husband wants kids to call him "Father"?

We have our first baby on the way, (2 more months!) and he wants them to call him Father. I personally think Daddy or Dad is more appropriate, I don't like the sound of them just calling him Father 24/7. A little too proper for me, and I thought for him too, But I guess he just likes feeling like a God (Men and their ego?). On the other hand, it is his name and not mine, but what do you think of it?

  1. it is his choice, so just let him be called father. maybe he just wants to be different?

    best of luck =)

  2. I would hate to be called father. Dad or daddy seems more loving.

  3. Thats kind of weird. I've never heard of a dad who wanted to be called "Father". Did you ask him why? My grandmother called her parents Daddy & Mother, bc her dad was laid back and nurturing, while her mom was uptight and proper. I don't think there is much you can say/do about it bc you're right: its HIS name. I doubt it will stick though. If he doesn't change his mind when the baby is born and everyone has to say "Say hi to Father" or "I'm letting Father hold you", he'll almost definitely change his mind when his baby is saying Ma-ma and can't even begin to pronounce Father! Every dad wants Baby to say Da-da before Ma-ma!

I wouldn't stress over it. Congrats!

  4. ha ha once the baby get old enough to talk it will make fun of him and call him dad just cause he knows that he doesnt want them to no kids call there dads father the child will see other children with there dads and just catch on to the word

  5. Let the child call him whatever he wants as long as he is a good father and helps out.....I bet he will be so happy for those first words,,,which by the way is usually da da...Not FATHER....

  6. My parents are Mother and Dad. There is nothing wierd about it. I only refer to my mother as mom if she is driving me insane. :)

If he prefers "father" than that is fine. My only suggestion is that he braces for being called something very strange when your baby begins talking. If you refer to him as "father" to your baby, your baby will probably call him "vava" as the "f" sound is difficult.

  7. Father would be weird for me too. I'd prefer Dad or daddy or heck even Pop or Poppa. Did he and his dad have a close relationship? Do they now?

  8. Forget formal, it seems a little chauvinistic to me. Is he a Catholic priest? Weird! Your kids will call him what they are comfortable with not what you guys are, and my guess would be that FATHER is not going to be it

  9. In my opinion, "father" is way too proper. I can only imagine calling my father "daddy" or "dad" I young baby or toddler calling him "father" is just weird to me. Tell him to get his ego in check.

  10. it really depends on the child! Kids usually call their parents what is suitable for them. My daughter calls me mom, mom mom, mommy, ma, and momma. It's whatever they can work out

  11. It seems too formal and like it lacks a real personal connection. Daddy is more appropriate, in my opinion.

  12. It really reminds me of the saying that "Any one can be a father, it takes a real man to be a Daddy!"

Just seems too formal for me.  I'll bet he changes his mind the first time his baby says "Dada".

  13. Has he told you his reasons?  Maybe that's just what he called his father growing up, so it's normal for him.

I would let it go for now.  Once that baby starts to talk, her first word will probably be "dada".  His heart will melt and he'll love being called dada.

  14. At least he doesn't your child calling him by his first name.

  15. Hello!

Well personally I think the child should choose hat they want to call him. Is just going to correct them every time? That seems a little controlling.

  16. Proper? lol ............is he a Priest? lol

I appreciate my husband more and more everyday! Not all men have the ego of a small planet!
