  1. Stick a zinc nail in one end and a grafite pencil in the other. Done. These are your positive and negative leads. It gets between 1 and 1.5 volts, about the same as a standard AA battery.

    I've never done it with a potato, but I have done it with an apple before. Supposedly, a potato works about equally well.

    If you get enough of these potato batteries together, you can light up a pickle as a lightbulb, but you'd probably need a large sack of potatoes to draw that much power. When I made a pickle lightbulb, I used the power from a wall outlet. (Be very careful doing the pickle experiment, as there's a danger of electrocution and fire, the potato experiment is very safe though.)
