Husbands in the navy, How to go about transferring overseas?

My husband is an IT in the navy. We both want to go overseas. Just want some general information on how to do so, or if anyone has been transfered over seas.

He plans on making a career out of the navy. He has 4 more years of sea duty before he is going to reenlist for shore. But we dont want to wait 4 years to go. So any ideas on how to transfer now to an over seas location Ex Okinawa Japan or Sicily (mind my spelling) Thanks

  1. The Navy likely has resources to assist you in this relocation assuming your husband has been given orders to report to an international location. Work through them if at all possible. They should have the resources to smooth the transition plus a built in support network at the base.

Doing it on your own is much harder as you would likely need some type of sponsorship or work permit to be able to work overseas or in some cases even spend much time there. Consult an expert on tax impacts and plan frequent trips home. Don't underestimate the health, financial, cultural and language challenges. My time overseas was much more difficult than I thought it would be and I had corporate sponsorship the whole time.

I never appreciated America more than when I came home from overseas. It was a great adventure but be prepared and flexible for the unexpected. Things just don't always work the way you might like... Learn the culture and some basic language skills for the place you are going as that will help as well. Good luck!
