My husband is an IT in the navy. We both want to go overseas. Just want some general information on how to do so, or if anyone has been transfered over seas.

He plans on making a career out of the navy. He has 4 more years of sea duty before he is going to reenlist for shore. But we dont want to wait 4 years to go. So any ideas on how to transfer now to an over seas location Ex Okinawa Japan or Sicily (mind my spelling) Thanks

  1. Hi, first off congrats for your husband serving our Country

Second, head over to http://www.mynavyonline.com im KJC88 there. We can help with actual factual answers from Navy personnel, they can direct you to who to talk to or what process to do.

    Good luck!

  2. After serving a minimum of 2 years at his current command he can put in a request for a split tour. If he can't get a split tour then he will have to wait until he is up for shore duty. Do NOT go to Okinawa, it is sooo boring! Go to Yokosuka, Japan or Naples, Italy.

  3. How long has he been in?  What is his Rate?  Usually if they are new, E4 and below Accompanied OCONUS orders are not done at all, financially it can be very difficult for some families.  Usually in many areas the spouse is limited to where they can get work, plus you can't take a vehicle, Cost of Living, etc... It can also depend on what is open at the time, if the only place they need ITs is CONUS locations then that is what is given.  He can speak to the Career Counselor with the command and find out if it would be an option.  Then he would have to find orders OCONUS and put in a request to be released from the current command.  Sometimes you will just have to wait until he has completed his time where he is now until you get the option of OCONUS orders.
