Huub Stevens delighted with Schalke’s narrow win over Bayer Leverkusen – Bundesliga News
It might not have been Schalke’s best performance this season but they still managed to sneak a winner at Bay Arena over Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royal-95-c40387 Blues coach, Huub Stevens, has expressed delight at his team’s away win, which has helped them
to third spot on the league table.
The two clubs locked heads on Sunday, October 23, with Schalke winning by a narrow 1-0 margin. Jefferson Farfan scored the only goal of the evening which proved enough to record an important win.
Bayer Leverkusen were impressive for most part of the game but failed to hang on to any of their many chances. The Werkself had a strong support of the capacity crowd present at BayArena but still lacked finishing touches.
Schalke, on the other hand, took ages to get going in the match. Huub Stevens’ men were on the back foot for majority of the 90 minutes, despite securing all three points on Sunday. Farfan helped his team to third place on the table with a fearsome strike.
Stevens applauded his team’s effort and congratulated them on an important away win. Speaking further, he refused to rule out his side’s title chances, which have received a boost following Bayern’s loss at Hannover on Sunday.
While talking during the post-match conference, the tactician added, "We're all very happy to win this game. The crowd at Leverkusen witnessed a very good match despite only one goal being scored. The game could have produced more goals.”
He further told, "At the end of the day, we might have been a bit luckier and benefited from Bayer being disorganised at a set piece. Jefferson Farfan’s goal was fantastic, but I don’t want to pick out any individual players. I’m happy with the whole team’s
performance. Our defence was outstanding. Brilliant. We’ve taken another step forward."
With the win on Sunday, the Veltins-Arena outfit have climbed to third place in the Bundesliga with 18 points from 10 games. They are just four points adrift of the current leaders, Bayern Munich, and will next be in action against Hoffenheim at home.
Leverkusen, on the other hand, are struggling with just 14 points from 10 games and find themselves ninth in the race.
