Why is the international date line designed to cross ocean not land?

  1. I dunno for sure, but it seems like the reason would be so that it wouldn&#039;t be majorly obstructive for people who had to pass over it on a daily basis. If it&#039;s over water, people won&#039;t be passing over it alot unless they were traveling and could easily change their clocks or whatever. Just what I think it would be. I dunno if there&#039;s an actual reason or anything.


  2. It effects the fewest people that way.  Say it went straight through New York city.  People on one side of Brooklyn wouldn&#039;t know what day it was!

  3. Official global time is kept in Greenwich England.  Every 15 degrees of longitude is 1 hour difference as you round the globe and where those divisions going away from Greenwich meet is the international date line.
