Hwan Tae Park clinches Men’s 400m freestyle crown: Day one - 2011 FINA World Championships
Day one of the 2011 FINA World Championships saw the impressive performance of Hwan Tae Park in the Men’s Long Course meet in Shanghai, China, on Sunday, July 24.
The session of the meet conducted the Men’s 400m freestyle final. In the corresponding race, Korea’s Tae Park came out strongly and secured the gold medal with a sterling time of 3 minutes and 42.04 seconds. After the race, Park was immensely pleased with
his impressive performance in the World Championships.
In the meantime, Yang Sun of China claimed the silver medal with a time of 3 minutes and 43.24 seconds, whereas, Paul Biedermann of Germany picked bronze in a time of 3 minutes and 44.14 seconds.
Peter Vanderkaay of United States of America wound up fourth in a time of 3 minutes and 44.83 seconds, while Ryan Cochrane of Canada earned fifth place honours in a time of 3 minutes and 45.17 seconds.
Yannick Agnel of France wound up sixth in 3 minutes and 45.24 seconds, whereas, Oussama Mellouli was placed seventh in 3 minutes and 45.31 seconds. Sebastien Rouault of France finished eighth in a time of 3 minutes and 47.66 seconds.
On the other hand, Dana Vollmer of United States took home the Women’s 100m butterfly semi-final with a winning time of 56.47 seconds.
After the race, Vollmer said, “I'm very excited about [the record]. I have started to take charge of my own career. It's such an amazing pool. The arena is huge. The Chinese are very strong. But I have to focus on my own race. I love racing very much.”
Lu Ying of China finished second in the respective meet with a time of 57.18 seconds. While speaking about her performance, Ying said, “It was just so so, but better than in the heats this morning. For me, the world championships are kind of a warm-up for
next year's London Olympic Games.”
Sarah Sjoestroem of Switzerland hit the wall in 57.29 seconds to earn third place honours, while Alicia Coutts of Australia finished fourth in a time of 57.41 seconds. Jemma Lowe of Great Britain settled fifth in 57.57 seconds.
