Hwo did the colonial society in Chesapeake region differ from that in New England?

  1. I answered this question in AP us history just Friday, but it was an essay as part of a test and I forgot what I wrote.

    As best I can remember:

    New England society was more religious and more focused on family values. They came over as families, and they looked down upon greed and materialism, and the settlers were carefully-picked to be the best colonists. Their economy was based on fishing. They highly valued education (founded Harvard, Yale, etc...) and government by the people (mayflower compact - all males have a say in government)

    Jamestown and the Chesapeake on the other hand were founded solely for the profit of an english joint-stock company.

    They were basically uber-capitallistic, and the power was held exclusively by the richest of them. The colony was almost exclusively male, and they grew cash crops like tobacco so as to maximise their profit.
