  1. Legwork will help you a lot if you are an aspiring goalie.  You need your legs to get yourself up out of the water to make blocks and the stronger your legs are, the farther you will be able to reach.  I've found that medicine balls help a lot while training in water.  Some good exercises are eggbeatering while holding over your head and having someone else stand on the deck right above you and drop the ball to you.  (The goal is to pass the ball back as quickly as you can without letting it touch the water.)

When you get to actually blocking balls, make sure you keep you eye on the ball the entire time.  Shift your position in the cage as the ball gets passed around in the frontcourt, but stay vertical in the water.  If the ball gets shot to either side of you (and it will be if the shooters are halfway decent), lunge with only the arm that is closest to the ball.  Lunging with your other arm across your body will only limit your range.

Also, beware of the popular places that people will shoot the ball.  The hardest places for a goalie to reach (and therefore where the other players will aim) are the corners of the cage and the "bunnyhole" (the space right over a goalie's head in the middle of the cage).

Another tip is to keep your hands close to the surface of the water while you are anticipating shots.  The deeper your hands are in the water, the harder and slower it is to get them out of the water.  When the ball is at the other end of the pool, you can use your hands to skull and take some of the burden off your legs.  ;)

And most importantly, you can't be afraid of the ball.  I've seen numerous goalies make some blocks with their head!  If you're afraid of getting hit in the face with a ball, you'll have to work on that fear if you become a goalie.

Good luck with your freshman year!  I hope that you'll be a great goalie.

  2. you need to be able to egg beater really good to make you get out of the water. you also need to be able to take hard hits and not get scared when the ball comes at you.  And you need to be able to have a good arm to throw the ball more than halfway down the filed to get it to people when the ball gets turned.you don't really need to swim, just to get from one side of the cage to the other.

exercises that you could do to get better at egg bettering, it get a jug of water and fill it up, then flip it over and try to egg beater when the water is draining out of it.

hope this helps. just don't be scared of the ball.
