  1. Sometimes Switzerland is written as SUI and when it is, it is as others have said because the French name is Suisse. However, in other contexts the abbreviation for Switzerland is CH, because the German-, French-, Italian- and Romantsh-speakers of Switzerland all have different names for the country (Schweiz, Suiise, Svizzera, Svizra) so in the interest of compromise they use the Latin name, Helvetia--the C is for whatever Confederation is in Latin.

  2. suisse, and spain is españa. that's the way the country's native language calls itself.

  3. Both are the abbreviations in French, Suisse/Espagne

Switzerland anyway is a exceptional country with all possible names and abbreviations.

    Official: CH (confoederatio helvetica)

    Websites: CH

    Airplane: HB (helvetia b... - don't know)

    Stamps: Helvetia

    Sports: Sz or SUI

    Translations:

    Switzerland

    Schweiz (German)

    Suisse (French)

    Svizzera (Italian)

    Svizra (Romantsch)

    Suiza (Spanish)

    Greetings from Switzerland

  4. A lot of abbreviations for countries are based on the native language name for the country.

  5. It comes from Suisse and Espana respectively.

  6. Switzerland is the English name. In French (the language used by many Europeans) it is Suisse (SUI).

    Likewise, Spain is Espana (ESP).

Not everyone in the world speaks English alone.
