  1. Most golfers use hybrids to take the place of long irons (usually the 3, 4, and sometimes, the 5-iron). The shape of hybrids makes them easier to hit than their iron counterpart--usually, golfers find that hybrids offer more forgiveness on mishits (and bad swings), and hybrids will also get the ball in the air quicker, and therefore stop quicker (important when trying to land on the green).

Be careful though, as there is no industry-standard when it comes to clubs. What I mean, is that a 3-iron made by Callaway won't necessarily have the same loft as a 3-iron from TaylorMade, so you may not like the results of just replacing a 3-iron with a 3-hybrid. You need to check your irons to find out what loft it is (easy to find clubs and their lofts online), and get a hybrid with that same loft.

And yes, you may still want to carry a 3-wood. A 3-wood has a loft somewhere in the range of 14-16 degrees....a 3-iron's loft is more in the range of 19-21 degrees....very different clubs.

There's tons more explanation needed, but in a nutshell, don't worry so much about what number a club is....the main thing you need to know is that a club with less loft (lower number) will make the ball go farther, and a club with more loft will make a ball go shorter and higher.

  2. That is correct. The only exception might be for those who don't do a good job of getting the ball airborne with an iron; they may hit a hybrid farther than they hit an equally lofted iron due to the improvement in launch conditions. You will not likely out hit a 3 wood with a 3 hybrid though. The wood is 4-6 degrees lower in loft and 1-2+ inches longer, and shares a lot of launch characteristics with the hybrid.

  3. I have three hybrids that take the place of my 2, 3, and 4 irons (they are much easier to hit), and I do still carry a 3 wood.  The 3 wood is the only wood I do carry though.

  4. some people find low irons hard to hit such as a 3 4 5 iron, so the corresponding hybrid with the same loft replaces that iron and is easier to hit but you can't maneuver the ball as well so its usually played by high handicapers. Also the hybrid tends to travel a few yards further then the corresponding iron maybe 5-10yds due to the nature of a wood. Yes 3 wood would be good to have because thats a fairway wood. Hybrids are just for replacing the irons not fairway woods! Hit em good!

  5. It all depends. I have 2 hybrids that replace my 3 and 4 irons but I still carry my 5 wood. Now if I bought a hybrid with a very low loft like 14 or 16 then I would probably not carry the wood. So yes keep your 3wood and just replace your 3, 4 and maybe even your 5 but check the lofts on those clubs and match it with the hybrid loft.

  6. Yes , you should carry a 3-wwod. Buy hybrids clubs by their LOFTS, not by their designations. Whatever you do, you should have a 4-5 degree separation between each club.

For example, Driver 10 degrees, 3-wood 15 degrees, next club 19 degrees, and so forth.Don't get hung up on a hybrid that says 2 hybrid, 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid, etc. Find out what the loft of each club is and buy accordingly.
