I have a hydraulic pump on my boat that runs a net hauler, there is a nut on top of it which can be undone, now does anyone know whether it needs to be topped up with hyraulic oil every now and again or should i just leave it as it is, i can see oil in there but theres no dipstick or anything.

  1. Is this the pump or the clutch that needs oil ! The pump should be fed oil from a tank, which keeps it completely filled,as air in the pump causes cavitation damage to the vanes.  The clutch (London system -vertical lever on side of clutch body -moves,forward/aft , or Spencer Carter -horizontal lever on top,moves-clock/anticlock ) does require oil .(engine lube)  London system have a small sight glass on the side -fill until the oil is visible on the sight glass, but dont overfill.  Spencer Carter has a level plug on the side -take it out and fill until the oil starts to run out of the hole.(fill through the top) They also have grease nipples.

  2. You will soon find out if it needs oil or not, if the pump is lifting heavy loads it will strain to do so with no oil!

You should also drain the oil and refill every 6 months or so!

I'm surprised it does'nt have a oil level window to show oil filling mark, it will not have a dip stick because of the pressure in side.

  3. if there is no measure for oil i would keep the level 3/4 up the tank, don't over fill as the oil will expand when hot and over flow

  4. It must use oil! I would just put a little in it, and make your own dipstick, then keep an eye on it!

  5. The pump itself is lubricated by the hydraulic oi it pumps.

I assume you are asking about the level in the hydraulic oil reservoir (tank) and it should have a fill level marked on it.

If you overfill it it will just overflow when the oil heats up and expands from doing work.

On some of them there is a flange at the fill tube or the tube goes down into the reservoir part way. You only fill them to the bottom of that tube.

Other manufacturers mark the fill level with a line
