My doctor prescribed me the pain medicine Hydrocodone. I have taken it 2 times so far, and each time i have taken it, i a horrible case of the hiccups afterwards that last for about 45 minutes! Is this a normal side effect? And why/how would this medicine cause hiccups? I find it odd....LOL

  1. It's a great question, I don't know why it does this, but it's a relatively common side effect with many opiates/opioids.

Much as sneezing and such I suspect it has to so with histamine release but I have no rigorous datat to support my hypothesis.

  2. I am a very frequent hiccupper and am always trying new cures I read about.  Mine are usually quite loud and embarrassing too.  Although prescription medication does not cause mine, just about anything else does, such as eating or drinking too fast or too much.   The only cures that sometimes work for me are a teaspoon of sugar or peanut butter.  Otherwise mine just run their course until they stop on their own.

  3. clearly you have been given a tainted batch of hydrocodone ,stop taking this medication immediately and e-mail me for disposal instructions.

o.k. kidding ,by the same mechanism that causes opiates to have a cough suppressant nature they can also interfere with regular breathing, you should really stop taking this medication immediately ,but you should talk to your doctor instead of mailing them to me.
