Hydrogen Car or Hybrid Car ???

Now that Blu-Ray won against HD disks...A new technology war is here and I wanted your opinion on this matter...I personally like the Hydrogen Cars myself...I also thought I had seen another idea a long time ago...It was a hybrid car that you charged by electric at night, but solar panels kept it going all day...I would also like your opinion on this idea as well.

  1. No doubt about it - plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars are the transportation of the future.  The technology is advancing rapidly, it's highly efficient, and the infrastructure (power grid) is already in place.

Hydrogen has a number of serious roadblocks.

    1) Where to get the hydrogen fuel from.  Currently 96% of our hydrogen comes from fossil fuels.

    2) No transportation and storage infrastructure (few hydrogen fueling stations).

    3) Fuel cells currently require platinum, which is extremely expensive.  The Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell car is leasing for $600/month.  And that's just a lease!

    4) Electric cars are simply better in almost every aspect.

  2. Even H2 fuelled cars will likely be hybrids:

    1. Fuel cells combined with electric hub motors create a much lighter drivetrain than batteries with a longer range.

    2. It is more efficient to store reclaimed (regenerative braking), surplus and solar generated electric energy in batteries.

So hybrid cars, no matter what fuel they use, will most likely incorporate some form of electric energy storage.  But the problems with range for purely electric vehicles makes them unsuitable for long distance travel, which gives the advantage to hybrids.

  3. i don't see the attraction of hydrogen...it takes a lot of electricity to make..is hard to store and transport...requires all new fuel stations/pipelines/transport trucks....plug in electric with a small gas/diesel engine to extend range could b built today..like it or not gas/diesel is still the best deal...dollar per mile

  4. i love hydrogen cars, i hate hybrids

  5. HYDROGEN cars absolutely.

an electric car is fine as long as you are willing to bury the batteries in YOUR own yard after they are used up.

byproduct and waste from hydrogen car? water.

    hands down hydrogen.

electric cars are just a snobbish status symbol.

  6. Hydrogen can be made cheaply if groups invest in the structure. It is no more expensive than gas. The delay...

There is no commercial setting for Hyrogen. Meaning they cannot figure how to charge you for it.

    Our goal

Our goal is to bring hydrogen into a retail setting. Shell already has a hydrogen platform of production nodes all over the world. Over 50 million tonnes are produced and consumed every year. Through existing and planned demonstration projects Shell Hydrogen is currently building up our experience in connecting these production nodes with our retail infrastructure. Bringing hydrogen out of its industrial settings into the everyday lives of people, to places where consumers can access it as a fuel for their vehicles.

    From Shel

    Our strategy

We foresee the global hydrogen economy as a new structure in which hydrogen represents an important component of the portfolio of energy sources and fuels, and as a realistic alternative to the world's present wide-scale use of hydrocarbon fuels. The broad-based application of hydrogen offers a solution to current problems such as the dependency on finite fuels and uncertainty concerning energy supplies and air pollution Hydrogen could be a clean and abundant source of energy, to meet the world’s increasing demand. To actually be able to market hydrogen within the foreseeable future, Shell is operating along two channels. Firstly, Shell wishes to broaden its expertise, make the public more aware of the application and use of hydrogen by initiating and encouraging hydrogen-based projects. Secondly, Shell is actively

  7. Hydrogen is a pipe dream until someone come up with a cheap, clean way to may hydrogen.  The power you use to produce hydrogen, is far better used charging batteries.

Solar panel on a car won't produce much power. You might get a mile or two but that's all. There just isn't enough surface area on a car to power it using solar. Yes I've seen the sun racers and they carry one person on basically a bicycle, no radio, no heat, no air, and very little in the way of safety features.

You could use the roof of your house to charge a battery pack that would give you about 50 miles a day. If you tied to produce hydrogen using the same power you'd only get about 10 miles.

  8. Hybrid have been and always willbe a stop gap measure. Hydrogen has the greatest potential for a future fuel. They have begun to come up with new ways to make and store hydrogen that will make it viable I would venture to guess within the next decade. Hydrogen fuel cells are expensive and they willbe the future for cars but that won't be for at least 20 years hydrogen combustions is viable, being done now and as the infustructure gets up and running it willbe far better for the enviroment, all electric cars do is change one way of making carbon emissions to another way of making carbon emissions. For anyone who says you can use solar panels to charge a battery you can use solar panels or wind generators to make hydrogen.
