  1. The plan is to have hydrogen filling stations, but we're just not there yet.  The technology for hydrogen fuel cell cars is still catching up.

  2. Why buy hydrogen when you can produce it yourself?

I went from 18 mpg to 38 mpg using two hydrogen units.

The vacuum line sucks in the hydrogen from the hydrogen maker.

Click the link it will explain better.

I am going to install eight more hydrogen tanks in the rear of my truck with an extra battery to run it all.

Free Fuel? I'm not sure but I will find out when I get eight units installed.

    Good Luck!!!

  3. There are some places that have the Hydrogen available but few and far between. More likely to find them in California.

And while Hydrogen power is a nice sounding idea, it takes more energy to create the Hydrogen than you will get out of it.

  4. That's the problem, there is NO place to buy hydrogen at this time.  Leave it to GM to give us false hope and nothing more.

  5. There are multiple locations in California that have Hydrogren Stations (essentially upgraded gas stations). Chevy is thinking about only offering the cars to people who live in that area, or similar areas. Honda is doing something similar. A link about Honda's car is here: http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/16/autos/ho...

But the short answer to your question is that yes, there are hydrogen pumps :-)

  6. Currently there are two ways of getting hydrogen into the pilot vehicles that GM and Honda are offering:

GM has installed special Hydrogen refilling stations in the locals where the cars have been given to people - emphasis on GIVEN. I was personally on the back up list to get one but their first choice was able to take the Equinox so “cest la vie”. A chance to drive a hydrogen car (which I have seen on the road in my area many times) even just for a 3 month period would have been incredible!

These refilling stations are just like normal gas stations, you attach a locking hose to the filler hatch and it pumps liquid hydrogen into a tank on the Equinox.

Liquid hydrogen can be made many ways such as using water and electrolysis to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen or by extracting it from natural gas.

Honda will be providing refilling stations at the dealers that are leasing the Clarity and charging $600/month for use and fuel.

Honda is also working on Home Hydrogen Power Stations that will use natural gas or solar to make hydrogen which can be used to power your home fuel cell OR your fuel cell car.

Refilling times for both vehicles is about 5 minutes.

There are many technologies in the works to make hydrogen on board the car. One involves using a aluminum / gallium alloy and water. When you add the water to the alloy the oxygen bonds to the alloy and the hydrogen is released. The by product is heat - which is great for the northern areas of the US. Most of the water is recaptured after the fuel cell recombines the hydrogen and oxygen (in the air). To refill the car you would exchange the alloy with a clean tank. The alloy would be cleaned (removed the oxidation) and in theory can be reused many times with little or no waste.

The price of these vehicles is still prohibitive, even Honda admits the lease is heavily subsidized so we have time to work out the issues and get the price lower.
