  1. Hydros are the most reliable because there is no gearbox or belts to wear out. They cost substantially more than belt drives but if you are going to use it hard then the hydro will pay for itself in the long run. Hydros are usually faster as well.

    I've used belt drives (gear shift) for years with no problems with the gears, but the drive belts stretch eventually and need replacing ($$$).

    I've never heard of an automatic on a mower.
