My cat was just diagnosed with being hyperthyroid.

Anyone have a cat who has this but didnt opt for surgery or radiation? How long has your cat lived with it?

  1. Meds that slow thyroid gland down

    GENERIC NAME: levothyroxine sodium

BRAND NAME: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroidic

Period blood testing will balanc whot is normal and tweak dosage

I love cats myself, Unlike dogs they tend to be more like cats in the wild (due how late they were domestication by human)

  2. You are going to treat aren't you? The cat can live on the daily pills but you will have to run back to the vets for blood tests. to make sure the dose is correct.  The radio iodine tretament is best.

If you are not treating you should try to adopt your cat out or put to sleep instea of letting him suffer

  3. The problem is, the thyroid issue affects a bunch of other organs (kidneys, heart, blood pressure, etc.)  How long your cat lives will depend on what other damage manifests.  How much she suffers will depend on what other damage manifests.

You can try drugs.  My hyperthyroid cat did OK for a couple of years on drugs, but it was a real pain to administer (2xs a day).  Finally, it couldn't control her symptoms anymore (she started having seizures) so we had the difficult choice of putting her down, or getting radiation treatment.  We went with radiation.  It's been a year since then, and her quality of life has dramatically improved.  If I had known how much better she would be, I would have gladly ponied up for the radiation a couple of years ago.

  4. My mother who is a vet tech has 2 cats that are being treated for hyperthyroid. They are taking daily medication. I forget what it's called.

I didn't know about surgery or radiation. The cats have been on it for at least a couple of years now, probably more. One of my cats is being monitored for it now since her bloodwork looks like she may become hyperthyroid in time.
