Is a lower hypertransport speed processor compatible with a higher speed motherboard. Like an 800MHz processor with a 1000MHz board? Please only answer if you are certain and have experienced this.

  1. Do you have an amd processor and motherboard?

See intel hypertansport is a completly different thing from amd hypertrasport.

Intel Hypertransport has to do only with the CPU

AMD Hypertransport is the FSB (front side bus) which is the speed at which the cpu and the motherboard "talk" to each other.

But i wouldn't think their would be any problems with a lower cpu Hypertransport and it should work however there are two things.

first A cpu with a lower hypertransport might be a model of processor that is NOT compatible with the motherboard, so you would want to check a list of compatible cpus (which would actually solve your problem.)

And second It would be a waste to have a motherboard with a faster hypertransport. If you have two computers with every thing the same except one mother board has a higher hypertransport than the other you will not see a performance increase.

also be careful because if your cpu has a higher Hypertransport  than the motherboard I am pretty sure it will not work.

    I hope that helps!

  2. It 'sounds' as if you are referring to an AMD processor. AMD uses Hyper-Transport. If this is an Intel processor, and has HT after it's frequency speed, this stands for Hyper-threading Technology. A completely different world.

    Information about Hyper-transport: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperTransp...

    Now, lets regress a bit.

1.The first thing you need to look at, is a physical requirement. Does the processor, fit the processor socket on the motherboard? This may sound dumb in light of your question, but if this is a Socket 939 AMD processor, it won't fit in an AM2 or AM2+ socket. You can use an AMD processor that was in an AM2 socket, in a AM2+ socket.

    I hope I'm making some sense to you, here. (My niece always says,"Oh here we go! Geek talk! Wah-wah-wah! {Sound from Charlie Brown cartoon.}

If I knew WHAT processor, and WHAT motherboard, I could give you a direct answer. (Plus links to substantiate my answer)

1.Socket 754: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_754 (Generally AMD processors that fit this socket, also have an 800MHz Hyper-transport speed.

2.Socket 939: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_939  As you can see, AMD processors that use this socket, generally have a 1000MHz Hyper-transport speed. There are 754 socket holes on a Socket 754.

The processor that fits this has 754 pins on the bottom of it. Same thing with a Socket 939. There are 939 pins, and 939 socket holes.

Therefore, a Socket 754 processor will not fit in a Socket 939.

4.AM2 Socket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM2  940 holes and pins. 1GHz, or 1000MHz Hyper-transport speed. (A Socket 940 AMD processor won't work in this socket either. I know they both have 940 pins and holes. The chipset on a motherboard that has the Socket AM2, won't support a processor designed for a Socket 940.)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_940

    5.AM2+ Socket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM2%...

This is why it's hard to give you a direct answer, without knowing the 'players' involved. (You could just click on my avatar, and then on email Chickster.)

  3. its very much possible a lower 800mhz Bus processor can be compatible with 1000mhz bus supporting motherboard.

But a few things need to be checked first whether the motherboard and processor has same socket interface.

for example Pentium 4 processor with 800 mhz bus and 478 interface can be installed on a motherboard which has 478 socket and supports 1066 bus.

Another important thing is the main chipset on motherboard must support the processor.my motherboard supports Soket lga775 processors of Celeron/P 4/P4 D.and it supports 800 bus.but still it can't support core 2 duo processor of 800 bus that has same LGA775 interface.Because my motherboard chipset(Via) doesnot support core 2 do processor.

so before you buy a motherboard and processor check the packaging box motherboard it has all the info on what socket and bus(800 or 1066) processor it supports and it will inform you what processors it supports.
