Question:

Hypothetical question about pending penalty and a goal...?

Suppose that a delayed penalty is called. The puck is shot toward the penalized team's goalie, deflects through the five-hole and goes in the net.

Now, since the play is called dead the moment the penalized team touches the puck, does the goal count since the goalie touched it before it went in?

  1. defensive penealty...the goal counts.offensive...it waived off.

  2. Yes.  Gaborik scored against Columbus this way earlier.  He shot from the slot and and it deflected off of Adam Foote's stick and over Leclaire's shoulder.

It would have been a Zherdev hooking call on Gaborik in the neutral zone.

  3. Actually, the play is not stopped when the puck is touched, it is stopped when a player gains control of the puck.  The difference between a touch and control can be minuscule.

A goaltender making a save is never considered control.  A puck deflecting from a shot by the opposing team is usually not considered control.  The general rule of thumb outside of clear control is whether the player intentionally directed the puck in one direction or another.

If the goaltender is out around the face-off dot looking for a touch up on the delayed call, that will likely be blown down before it crosses the line.  If he is in his crease and the puck is shot on net he will be required to make the save before he can establish control.

  4. goal counts cuz he touched it but didnt have possession. no powerplay.

  5. I would agree based on the penalized team not gaining "possession" necessarily.
