Since there's just over 4.2 billion IP addresses and over 6 billion people, what would happen if everyone in the world were to connect a PC to the internet?

  1. This has actually probably already happened. It's likely that there are more devices with IP addresses in the world then there are available IP addresses, but by using a technique called Network Address Translation (NAT) a lot of these devices are "hidden" from the public Internet.

    As we get close to the point where we really are running out of addresses it will give people incentive to accelerate the roll out of IPV6 which provides for a much larger number of IP addresses.

    There also things that could be done to stretch the current number of available addresses that would buy more time for the IPV6 conversion.
