  1. Fatigue is most common symptom of Hypothyroidism followed by depression, muscle weakness and weight gain along with many other symptoms.

Best is to consult physician specially if any one in your family has got hypothyroidism,Doc will evaluate your symptoms and clinical findings thoroughly and advice you to get T3T4TSH done.

Hypothyroidism is treated with T4 with precaution in patients with known heart disease or at risk.

The goal of therapy is to maintain TSH level at normal .Over treating is potentially harmful and can cause problems with palpitation and blood pressure control and osteoporosis.

First step in diagnosing hypothyroidism is a simple blood test ,from there next step is decided best suited to you.Thyroid disease is very common and easily treated. So just relax and take first step.

There is no surgery for hypothyroidism except excision of goiters for cosmetic reasons or because of compression symptoms in special circumstances.

  2. When you say that "more likely than not I have it" doesn't make sense.  The diagnosis of hypothyroidism is simple and straightforward, and your GP should be able to diagnose this easily.  The only problem is distinguishing between primary and secondary hypothyroidism.  In any case, since the only reason one would even suspect hypothyroidism is if you were developing symptoms, since it isn't part of routine blood chemistry analysis.

But if you do have hypothyroidism, the meds used to treat it (T4, etc.) should make you feel better, not slow you down.  Surgical intervention is not warranted.

  3. I have it.  It does slow me down.  I take Levothyroxine (75  micrograms).  I am still usually tired/fatigued all the time.  Although since I started taking the pill, my hair stopped falling out and the severe dry patches on my skin got better.  They will only perform surgery if you develop a goiter or a nodule.  The nodule must be suspicious for cancer though.  I have a nodule, but the endocrinologist didn't think it was anything to worry about.

Only your doctor can diagnose you....but let me know if you want to talk about it some more.  I will be glad to help you out.
