Hyundai Atoz, Major problem???

Having major problems now, the car wont even start!

when reving the car the engine sounded like it kept clogging/popping so i thought it might have something to do with the exaust, i looked under the car and i think between section 1 to 2 from the engine there was exaust smoke escaping from the joint.

my neighbour who knows more about cars than me jumped in and also had a look under the bonnet but could not help, maybe made things worse because the car wont start now. sounds daft - i have no idea about cars but i think there may be a blockage in the exaust?

anyway, car wont move forward in gear, has a leak in the front sections of the exaust and now wont start, there was also a real acrid smell coming from the car that left a nasty taste....

any ideas???

  1. Sounds like a blocked catalytic converter I think that is why you have it blowing gasses out of the pipe, dont keep trying to start it or it could blow the head gasket due to the pressure. You could try getting someone to unbolt the cat off of the exhaust then try to start it, but you might find that you have already blown the head gasket and thats why it fails to start. If you are not sure what you are doing get a mechanic to have a look.

  2. Could just be a knackered catalytic converter, or possibly really is a spud pushed up yer exhaust!

  3. You need to start with the obvious things, check to make sure that you have fuel to the engine, spark at the spark plugs and compression in the engine. Check to make sure that there is life in the battery, check all the electrical connections from the battery to the starter, they should be good clean and tight.

The exhaust probably has nothing to do with the non starting, if its leaking on the joint you and remove the clamp, slide the exhaust backwards to split the pipe, apply exhaust sealer and then reassemble with a new clamp.

    Ja.

  4. Did the car start to lose power before this happened? I would agree it sounds like it could be a blocked cat or something up the exhaust, especially if if the smell is like rotten eggs. Get the cat disconnected from the front pipe and see if it starts, if not then move on to checking the spark and fuel etc.

  5. If your exhaust is blocked it will build up pressure while the engines running. Listen at the tail pipe for a hissing, it sometime continues for a few seconds after the engine is switched off.

    EDIT

Undo the first exhaust joint where the exhaust meets he manifold and try for a start.
