backyard... I was thinking about a Jack Russell Terrier, a Daschshund or a Chihuahua. Please advise! My sons are 13 & 9 and my wife does not want a destructive pet. Thank you!

  1. if you dont want a distructive pet i would recommend a shitzu or a chihuahua. but if you want a big dog then i would reccomend golden retrivers. but golden retrivers are often very naughty and very playful and big so watch out....

  2. small dogs are not suited to long outdoor times go with more of a medium sized dog.i'll warn you i have a maltese ( size of chihuahua ) and it was far more destructive than my black lab

  3. Chihuahuas are gentle and nondestructive. My friend had s**+-tuzs. They were really good but you can't leave them outside when it's cold. Oh- watch with small dogs...they can have an attitude and most need grooming. I know a lot need their hair combed or cut or they can get sore eyes and ears. Cocker Spaniels are cute and nice. Yorkies are cute. I know there is a quiz you can take and it will match you with a compatible breed. I just took one. Google it..it might help more. I am personally the labrardor and doberman type. Large dogs are good for protecting and are highly intelligent. Small gogs are good for kids though.

  4. I would get a Jack Russell or a Daschshund.  These are more boy dogs. The Chihuahua is too girly  Paris Hilton type.  More of a lap dog Look @ me Im a gentle baby type  They other 2 are playful not too ruff  very Intelligent  and easy to train They say I am  a mans best friend.

  5. If you don't want a destructive pet then you can leave out puppies. You should probably go to a local shelter and as a family choose a dog. Small dog breeds are more fragile, and with two boys, you may want to get a more hardy breed. Best thing you can do is talk to employees at a shelter and ask them, they could help you best.

  6. for heavens sake NOT a Jack Russell.. Terriers = Terrors

these dogs (all terriers) were bred to hunt and kill.. they are very mouth agressive... JRT's are smart they will be VERY destructive if not mentally stimulated all the time!!!

honestly your best choice is a Shih Tzu.. or Bichon.. but if its an outside dog.. dont get one.. none of the smaller breeds are happy by themselves.. all are PACK animals - and you are their pack

this is a good link about selecting a pup

remember NEVER NEVER from a pet store - you will pay too much and support a very cruel industry of breeding for profit ONLY (see Puppy Mills)

check your local shelter first.. or for breeders

  7. Jack Russell's are hyper.  Dachshund's are good.  Chihuahua's are small and nippy.  We have a c**k-a-tzu (cockier spaniel/shih-tzu).  He is great.  He loves it inside and he loves it outside.  He stays outside most of the day (when we are not home) and comes in at night or when we are home.  He isn't a big chewer (he has toys), not a barker, just playful enough, and a good size (15 pounds).  He has a great personality.  Not aggressive, not snippy.  We have two boys - 8 and 1.  But between your choices I would go with a Dachshund.  I like pugs too.
