Question:

I’m going camping this weekend, what are some good, cheap, easy recipes? What do you eat when you’re camping?

I haven’t gone camping in a LONG time and never camping more than a day without my parents, who did all of the cooking. Now that I’m going to be the oldest (and probably only) female camping since I’m going with my younger brother and boyfriend (and possibly a few friends) I’m probably going to be stuck doing most of the cooking. Problem is, I haven’t done camping cooking ever and am not really sure what I should bring to cook. I’m a decent cook, but I would like things that are quick and easy but also yummy.

I’m a vegetarian but probably the only vegetarian, and would like to keep the dishes mainly meat-free. I don’t mind throwing a bit of meat in there, but my boyfriend and I are supplying all of the food and we’re a little on the poor side, so I’d like to keep our meals either meat-free or focusing on cheap meat. We have no other dietary requirements.

Please let me know if you have any recipes or suggestions. I’d prefer if you gave me YOUR recipes (or link to a site of a recipe you’ve actually used) and give me a comment on how it was quick, easy, etc. Or if it took a long time to make, but was worth it. Let me know your opinions! I looked online a little but I just found a bunch of recipes with no comments on if people liked them or not. I’m not looking for anything fancy, I want to know what the average person makes when they’re camping so I don’t have to spend forever looking up recipes and going through them all.

  1. I'm guessing that you're going car camping and not backpacking, if so canned or frozen veggies & meats would work fine. If you are packing then just stick with the dried/flaked/foil wrapped foods:

    - Lipton, Knorr, or generic brand Pasta or Rice mixes (just add water and boil). Add meat as you/they like (ie. chicken & rice, chicken alfredo, etc...) usually <= $1.

    - Betty Crocker Mashed Potato mixes (just add water and boil - season to taste) usually <= $1.

    - Martha White, Bisquick, or generic brand Biscuit mix (just add water and blend with a fork, wrap a spoon full around the end of a stick and bake over a fire/coals until golden brown) - really good with those jelly packets you get from some fast food places! usually <= $1 for the Martha White or generic brands.

    - powdered eggs (mix with water and fry just as you would a scrammbled egg) (mix in bacon bits and season to taste).

Hope you have a great time!

  2. My favorite is instant oatmeal. Top ramen works good too and you can add most any thing to it to make a meal. Rice dishes work well for a main dish at dinner time. Rice a roni, etc. Just put in what you like to make it a complete meal. Imagination is part of the spice of life.

  3. Chicken Tetrazini (sp?)

(it tastes fine with or without the chicken)

    for lets say, 5 people

6, 7 packs of ramen noodles

two cans of cream of mushroom soup

    water

    chiken if you want

cook the noddles in water in a pot and once the noodles are somewhat cooked, add the soup, and half  of the flavoring,  chicken if you want. after you pour in the soup, use those cans to pour the water, probably just two cans of water.   let cook untill boiling, or the noodles are completly done, and everything is cooked down.

its not a very specific recipe, use your best judgement, i make it everytime i go camping, and it can be REALLY good.

  4. buy some military surplus MRE's they are good tasting quick to use and very efficient

  5. 30 ot 6 is 110% correct.  Instant, compact and water proof.  They taste good to.  Stay away from the Vegetarian MRE'S though.
