Hi, so I am hoping to start a radio show on a small scale radio station with a small listenership but those who listen enjoy it and are loyal to the station. It broadcasts on AM in the near area and plays everything, some shows play a real mixed bag of songs and others are more specific to a genre.

Can you help me with an idea for a format to a show, it can be a talk show, music show (general or specific) or any toher idea.

I also need a show name that goes with the format and maybe a name for me, like a DJ name. My names Jay (or Jai) Lovie, can you think of anything snappy for me? Both a show name and DJ name.

Also can I have any ideas for features, segments and competitions. Some good, fun ideas that will keep listeners smiling.

Thank you for all your help,

Im just needing to get an idea to get me on my feet and then I could grow from their.

Thanks again in advance.

J.

  1. I agree, J Love is a good stage name. When do you start? I'd listen to some of your fave stations, but really study them and their formats, write a list of what you like, what you dont, and what you cna expand on. you may also want to listen to some other stations around the dial. Good luck.

  2. The name doesn't matter. That's your ego. BE LOCAL. That's the ticket!

Localism is what has always made radio a must-buy against the other forms of advertising available...wait, wait, wait... you didn't say anything about advertising.

Oh, right. Is the show on NPR? Is it non-com? If so, than go right ahead.

If it isn't, you will soon learn that he number of advertisers you attract will be tantamount in your performance.

Be local, be brief (don't bore them to death) and be creative.

We don't know what will work in your town - only you do (or can find out), because you live there. So, take it to the streets. Ask the locals what they'd like to hear - then give it to them. Ask local merchants wha kind of show they'd consider advertising on - then give THAT to them and take the order (or have a salesperson accompany you).

There's lots more, but let's see how you do with what I've suggested so far.

  3. Call in talk shows are always good..let the listeners run the show.
