  2. Of course the UP wouldn't have even had the sense to have that battery if they hadn't merged in the SP!  I was a conductor on the UP.  The tests are not hard if you are good at taking tests.  You will have a saftey test, many tests over the General Code of Operating Rules, an air brake test (my hardest), and a signals test, plus a comprehensive test.  They are multiple choice.  One thing you can do is memorise the definition of restricted speed from the GCOR.

  3. I really can't speak to this..............exactly.  A similar question, however was posted several weeks ago concerning the Union Pacific's Operating Management Test Battery and the questions therein.  There may be some similarities for new hires, or at least 'set the scene' for the testing to come.  Basically, it is a three step process.

At the risk of being repetitive, here is the information I was able to develop:

1..... The "Battery" is the 72 volt variety out of a retired GP-9.

2..... There are two leads, one to an "anode," which is grasped in the left hand, the other to a "cathode," that is grasped in the other.

3..... The person conducting the interview controls the voltage. A prospect is judged on his management capabilities by a simple time = brain damage formula, as follows:

If an applicant can hang on for:

3 seconds...... Normal neurological function.  Unsuitable for management.

11 seconds...... Slight damage to neural synapses.  Borderline qualification for MOP (Manager of Operating Practices).  Was once called "Road Foreman of Engines."

16 seconds...... Indicative of drug use when younger.  Moderate damage qualifies you for an immediate position as an MTO (Manager of Train Operations).  Was once called "Trainmaster."

22 seconds...... You're on the fast track to Division Superintendent.

27 seconds...... Say hello to Omaha. First out for an office with a window.

32 seconds...... Congratulations.  You get the interviewer's job.

45 seconds or longer...... Guaranteed next open chair on the Board of Directors will have your rump in it.

    Good luck on the test.........
