Sometimes you can find that sort of thing on ebay.  Also check antique stores and flea markets in your area.  If you have estate auctions there, they are a wonderful source of such things.  Another option might be yard sales.  You can find wonderful chess sets sometimes at yard sales if you have a little time and patience and persistence.  I have also seen lovely chess sets at some large book stores, so check there as well.  Best of luck with finding it.

I'd been searching fruitlessly for a Chess Set for a few weeks... who would believe you can't buy a Chess Set in Leeds or Harrogate!?

I stumbled upon ChessBaron.co.uk but was dubious about buying online so called in at their base in Hull (luckily not too far away for me) to check out the pieces in the flesh. It's very important to get a feel for a set, to get an idea of weighting, size and wood tone, not just of the pieces but of the board as well. The guys at their unit were extremely helpful and I was extremely pleased when the various pieces and boards where brought out.

The set I opted for was the Stallion Knight Set with 3.5" King (86g). The black pieces are Ebony and the white are Chider Wood and all are triple weighted with leather bases. In addition I got an extra Queen for each side and a very nice leather 'Book End' style box for the pieces. The quality of the craftsmanship on the pieces is very high with the knights and king being exceptional. The board too is of a very high standard. Solid Rosewood with rounded edges.

For the money I don't think you can get better value or quality. I am currently sat looking at mine set out on the coffee table. Wonderful.
