I have two sources that I want to connect via optical to a receiver. But my receiver only has one port to connect. Both sources are connected via HDMI to my TV and I noticed that my tv has an optical port. Can I use that as a splitter?? Or should I just buy two cables and a splitter. Thanks!!

  1. ok

  2. it is better just buy two cables and a splitter. Even better if you could buy 3 cables and a switch.

  3. I put a link to a mechanical switch below.

  4. The TV won't work as a splitter. Maung is right about the switch. The resaon is that the 2 component may be outputing a signal at the same time which would send 2 audio signals into your receiver (garbling the sound). With a splitter, you may have to shut one component off while the other is on (and some components will still have a light on in the toslink even when off). A switch requires you to get up and turn it to the correct input though. If this is a pain, I would use hdmi to hook them up (assuming you have enough inputs) or even go with rca. They do sell remote switches but they're in the $100 range.

  5. Don't listen to them, you can use the TV as a "splitter" in a way, just connect the HDMI cables to the TV, that will take care of your video and audio to the TV, then take a digital optical line from the TV to the receiver

How this will work is, when you turn your volume on the TV all the way down (do not mute, on some TVs, it will activate the mute on audio out, but not the volume), or you may need to shut off the speakers on your television (you can do that in your televisions settings), the sound that would come out of your television's speakers, will instead be rerouted to the digital optical, and since your television is connected to your receiver, your receiver will act as your television speakers
