Are they a lot of work?

What sort of maintenance is involved and does it cost much money?

  1. Unless you REALLY want a pool, I'd avoid it.  They are expensive to run and maintain, they are a pain in the ***, and you only use it for a small part of the year.  Spend your money elsewhere.

  2. It costs a ton of money.  You have the chemicals to keep the water bacteria free and safe to swim in.  You have the equipment-ladders, nets, liners...And the big expense is the junp in your electric bill to run the motor all summer.  I took care of a patient with a small inground pool.  He said that his electric bill increased over $200/month once he turned the pool on for the summer, and that was 5 years ago.  Utilities have gone up, so it will cost you even more.
