  1. Alright so between those two, if you would want the best self defense in a real street fight i would recommend mma. But in my opinion, I like boxing better. Alright so lets say you want to start boxing. You're going to have to first learn the basics before you actually sparr against opponents. First thing you should buy are, bag gloves, a heavy bag which could be 70lbs or more or whichever you prefer, handwraps, and a good jumprope. Go online and search boxing tips or advice on google. They have a lot of articles which are useful to read, im going into boxing now and im still learning a lot so yea google helped me a lot. First learn your stance because thats your foundation of boxing and the first thing you should learn before you can start throwing your punches and working on your footwork. Are u left handed or right handed? if your left handed, you'd be consider a south paw fighter but if ur your right handed which everyone usually is then they are considered to fight in an orthodox stance. After you'd learn your stance, start learning the jab which is the most important punch in boxing because its your setup for your power punches which is usually your straight rights and uppercuts, etc. Then learn how to move in the ring which is your footwork. Its important to have good footwork in order for you to move around and throw combinations at different angles. When u have learned all the basics, you can then start realli training on your conditioning, roadwork, strength, punches, and anything u think that needs improvement. Use the handwraps and gloves on the heavy bag as i mentioned before. Practice throwing your punches and move around with the bag and remember to keep your hands up and have good form. Dont just stand there when you are punching as if it were a real match, your opponent would retaliate and hit u back but a heavy bag wouldn't. Keep practicing your jab until you or your coach, trainer, friends, etc. think have mastered it. Jump rope everyday to improve your footwork, coordination, endurance, and your conditioning. hope this helped. =D

  2. Well you can start with videotape or CD training sessions. Tony Atlas, Kenny Weldon, and others has some great tapes covering everything from the fundamentals to advanced techniques. Check on-line you'll find a wide selection to choose from. Same with MMA training! They will also cover gear and equipment like hand wraps, gloves, bags, etc... When your ready let us know where you live and we can find you a local gym to train at. Good luck to you!
