  1. Depends entirely on what your interests are.  The things you mentioned you can do on any of the islands & have a very good time.  Here's my capsule sumary of the major islands:

Kauai: very lush, green island, relatively undeveloped, great scenic beauty & lots of outdoors activities.  Not much shopping or nightlife.  Gets the most rain.

Oahu: Waikiki is very crowded & full of tourists, but it has good hotels & restaurants.  There is lots to do outside of Waikiki that is much less "touristy" - there are relatively uncrowded beaches,  hiking trails, etc.  More opportunities for historical things like Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace, etc.

Maui: lots of high end resorts, natural beauty, best whale watching

Big Island of Hawaii: Kona side, somewhat arid, good charter fishing; HIlo side, more wet, Volcanoes National Park, waterfalls, orchid farms.

  2. I suggest Maui for Christmas.  Oahu still toooo crowded and you'll enjoy it there FO REAL!!  Weather is AWESOME no matter what island your on.  Lots to do & great people, no doubt

  3. Depends. If you like the island life more native than commercial or if you like all the tourist traps. I went to Maui because I don't like the tourist areas so much as I do the natural feeling of island life. Still, there were places to shop and dine and so on but, the majority of the island was more relaxed and not so rushed. I stayed in Kehei where the weather was nice and the beaches were fine. It was close enough to shopping, yet there were lots of open beaches and palm trees. If I wanted more social activity, I just drove 20 minutes to Lahaina. It was well worth the drive and I enjoyed every bit of Maui.

  4. Listen to boomer gal, that is a good description of the islands and I will further add check out YMT Vacations, they will do a 4 island tour over 15 days for like 1500 bucks.  Seeing all of the islands is the only true way to see Hawaii.  Waikiki is not typical of Hawaii.  Enjoy!  I am so envious and can't wait to go back!!
