I'm a legal US citzen, born and raised here. I'd like to know if any, what jobs/careers would make it nessasary to move or work in Edmonton, Alberta in canada?

I know it's a strange question, but i'd like to know .. also, if I were to move there, what documents would I need?

I know I would need a US passport .. what else would I need?

thanks!

  1. Besides a passport you would need a suitable Visa to be able to work here.

Workers for just about all jobs are needed out here.  Of course the oil and gas industry pays well if you have the skill/ability to work there but it's not all beer and sunshine.  It's long hours, bad living conditions in the oil patch (10 or so guys sharing a house in shifts or living in a "camp" situation with chances of no heat/electricity) and it can be expensive if not impossible to buy a house, even in Edmonton.  I bought my 30 year old, 3 bedroom/2 bath house 3 years ago for $180k and it goes now for $335k.

Also, without Provincial sales tax there are many things that the user pays for that are quite often paid for in other provinces.  I have a kid in school and while school busing (yellow bus) was free in Ontario it costs me $70 a month here.  2 weeks before I left Ontario I bought a new car off the lot and still needed to pay $110 here for an "out of province vehicle inspection" before I could register it in Alberta.

I live in Edmonton and I have 2 Timmies within 4 blocks of my house, both of which close at 10 pm because they can't find enough workers to stay open over night.

It's alright out here but it certainly isn't Shangra-la.  Personally, I can't wait to leave.

  2. You will find the website useful.  I live in Edmonton and we are having shortages in all fields.

Oil field workers are in high demand as well as any trade, skill or profession!!!  From farm labor to doctors!

    Good luck!
